NAS options from QNAP and Synology are straightforward. I own a Synology setup, and configuring it for home streaming and external access was quite easy. Redundancy isn't necessary unless you prefer it.

I agree, those models are quite pricey. I'm looking for something comparable but more affordable, ideally under $300.

They can be costly, indeed. I've noticed folks suggesting the second-hand market. Certain older versions could offer sufficient strength for your needs at a much lower price.

The system includes 2GB of DDR4 RAM, but that amount might be limited depending on your needs.

Others can get better performance. My DS216J has 512MB of RAM, which has worked well for me. I rely on it for backups and streaming my personal media collection at home without any conversion.

The 2GB should be sufficient. Should I have a transcoding-capable NAS? And why would I need it?

For this scenario: Likely yes. It varies based on your media's original quality, device compatibility, and your internet speed at home and while traveling. You should convert to reduce bitrate for streaming over slower connections. Also, adapt files for specific devices. In my situation I don’t need conversion. My collection mainly consists of Bluray discs I’ve ripped and converted to high-quality H.264 and H.265. I only stream at home and am confident all my devices support those formats (most current ones).

The QNAP TS-451+ meets your needs, especially with the HDMI port. It’s a solid choice compared to the Synology DS418.

Yes, the Celeron CPU includes Intel QuickSync, which allows hardware-based encoding and decoding. Unless you need that HDMI connection for a specific purpose—like turning your NAS into a basic HTPC—I wouldn’t pick this model just for that. I’m not sure how it stacks up against other options.

The HDMI will link it to a basic television. By the way, I really value all the details you provided. Thanks!
