I assembled my present system in 2016 and have been gradually improving it. Below are the latest details: PCPartPicker Part List Type Item Price CPU Intel Core i5-6400 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor CPU Cooler ARCTIC Freezer 34 eSports DUO CPU Cooler Motherboard Asus H170 PRO GAMING ATX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2133 Memory Memory Kingston HyperX Fury Black 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2133 Memory Storage SanDisk SSD PLUS 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive £38.00 @ Amazon UK Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive £36.97 @ CCL Computers Video Card EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6 GB SC GAMING Video Card Case Corsair SPEC-02 ATX Mid Tower Case Power Supply SeaSonic PRIME Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply Operating System Microsoft Windows 10 Pro OEM 64-bit £99.00 @ Amazon UK Monitor AOC G2460VQ6 24.0" 1920x1080 75 Hz Monitor £142.99 @ Amazon UK Monitor AOC G2460VQ6 24.0" 1920x1080 75 Hz Monitor £142.99 Prices cover shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts Total £459.95 Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-05-04 16:27 BST+0100 It appears the system is heavily limited by the CPU, so upgrading it would help. I doubt a new motherboard is necessary since I’m on a budget and planned to purchase a used CPU. What are your thoughts on what’s worth investing in? A 6700 seems reasonable. The motherboard isn’t compatible with overclocking. Thanks!

6700/7700 for keeping the board in mind. You could also consider a Ryzen 5 1600AF at 12nm as a budget-friendly boost when combined with a B450 Pro4. Finally, it might be wise to hold off until September for the Zen3 update.

It really hinges on your budget and whether you can snag a reasonably priced used component. I wouldn't recommend jumping onto any CPU from that time unless you're willing to pay around fifty dollars; most people will try to resell them for two hundred to three hundred dollars, and you'd need to spend roughly four hundred to buy a Ryzen 3 3300X plus a budget x450 motherboard. If you manage to find a decent 7700, consider upgrading your RAM to something stronger like a 3200mhz CL16—fourteen megahertz is quite limited unless your system is mainly for basic tasks like word documents or social media browsing.

I aim to reduce expenses, so I’d likely stick with my existing motherboard.

Consider the cost when comparing models. The 1600AF and Pro4 usually offer better value than the 6700/7700, especially since each of the six key features of the 1600AF is available for just $80.

You can purchase one for $300 if you verify compatibility with your old 6400. Consider using the Optiplex for another purpose, then resell or give it away. Breaking down the price suggests it’s more affordable than buying the i7 alone.
