Looking for something around 3600 under $200 nearby? Folks often mention that number, though the extra specs like faster factory clock, better cooling, and overall performance make it more than worth the slight premium.

There are three perspectives on it:
- Budget focused = 3600
- Wanting top performance with optimal value = 3600
- Seeking maximum performance despite higher power consumption = 3600X

I’m choosing the R5 3600 since my motherboard isn’t up to the task, so I’ll cut costs and upgrade it.

I believe the increased TDP comes solely from the 3600 model featuring a more powerful CPU cooler. The processor units remain identical in terms of energy use. This 3600 is simply a categorized version of the 3600 with a faster initial clock speed.

TDP should not influence the cooler included with a CPU. The cooler needs to match the TDP of the processor, not vice versa. The TDP is probably higher because of the increased stock clock speeds. It seems there might also be some power adjustments from AMD that the 3600s don’t have in terms of maximum power consumption.

I believe other reviews agree on this point. It seems AMD includes the stock CPU cooler in their calculations for TDP, which implies the 3600x matches the 3600 in power consumption. Manufacturers' TDP values should be interpreted cautiously. The I9 9900k is shown as 95W, yet it actually consumes significantly more power than other chips with similar ratings.

The 3600x features an improved cooler and a higher base clock. It isn't a standard binned 3600 model. When you buy a 3600x alongside a 3600, you're getting a better cooler paired with the 3600's core specs. If you plan to swap out the cooler and never use it, you'll be acquiring an "x" version.
