I'm looking at a few CPU options for my purchase. The choices are Intel Core i5-9600KF, Intel Core i7-9700F, and Intel Core i3-10320. When checking PC Part Picker, the main distinctions came down to their microarchitecture, cache sizes, and support for multithreading. Does anyone have an opinion on which one performs better? Also, can you explain what microarchitecture is and what simultaneous multithreading means?
Choose an i5 for gaming and work tasks, and an i7 for video editing and streaming. The i5 offers better overclocking potential on a Z390, while the i7 provides more cores. The i3 is underpowered for most needs. Unless you’re using a Z390 or playing games, opt for the i7; otherwise, go with the i5.
Microarchitecture mainly covers processor generations (9th versus 10th) and possibly core setups (4 to 8). The L1-3 cache acts like ultra-fast RAM built right onto the chip—more is advantageous. Simultaneous Multi-threading lets cores handle two threads at once, so you can get 4 cores with 4 threads or 4 cores plus 8 threads via SMT. Having more cores is preferable; 8 cores/16 threads outperforms 4 cores/8 threads, though with the same count SMT wins: 8 cores/16 threads beats 8 cores/8 threads. For gaming and productivity, an 8-core/16-thread configuration is ideal. You can function with 6 cores/12 threads, but a 8-core setup is now standard, even for games. Avoid quad-core designs altogether.
