Avoid moving up from Windows 7 to Windows 8. Perform a complete reinstall of Windows 8; it runs significantly quicker. I installed it and used it for several months, but once I started from the beginning, it booted and loaded programs much faster. I’m not sure why, but I recommend doing a fresh install if you want the best performance.
Thanks for the introduction. FSX seems tricky if every addon needs an installer—it could be frustrating. If they don’t, you might fit it into Windows’ registry and let the addons run with just the files. Keeping your app data and documents folders can help restore settings after updates. I’ve done this with Teamspeak 3, Skype, Tweetdeck, Playclaw 5, etc., without starting from zero except for Arma 2, which still glitches my controls.
