Hi everyone! For the last few days I was thinking about my current RAM-situation in my gaming PC. I have the following specs: - Intel i5 13600K (running at 5,5 Ghz) - Noctua NH-D15 - NZXT N5 Z590 - Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 12GB - Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 (2x 8GB RAM sticks) (running in XMP-mode at 3200Mhz) RAM prices are currently low and seeing AAA games demanding 32 GB of RAM more frequently I'm thinking to upgrade the RAM. The RAM is the oldest component in my PC. I see two options: Buy additional Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 RAM or Buy new RAM. I'm looking into the Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK32GX4M2D3600C16 The new RAM should be low profile because of my Noctua NH-D15 air cooler What should you do and why? Or is there an option I'm missing? I'm leaning towards the first option because RAM-speeds don't seem to matter that much in gaming performance in my research. I don't know how long RAM can be used before it tends to die. At these prices and the age of my RAM, maybe a new kit would be smart? I really struggle here Thank you for your help and input.
There isn't one game (unmodded) that requires over 16GB, though Windows and multiple open browsers can push usage higher. For modded titles you might need more than that. I'd purchase two extra 8GB sticks. DDR4 memory controllers are very reliable these days, and using four is straightforward.
3600 16-19-19 and similar fake options don’t improve performance much since the main settings don’t change much. Buying another set only makes sense if it matches the same version or model, otherwise you’ll get different features. Even with the same model, things often differ due to version changes. The 3200c16 is a slow model, so it should work fine but might have problems like speed claims failing or no display if the settings clash. Stick to genuine rigs for best results. If you really want top speeds, consider a 4x8 dual rank build with a used HMA81gu6djr8n or CT8G4DFS8266, or a 3600c18. A 4000-4200c20 setup with a 1 OC will give you better gains, especially in the lower ranges, though some games might perform better than others.
