I currently own an ASUS RT-AX92U with two units linked through a wired Ethernet connection. I’ve faced problems where DNS and external IP connections would fail, followed by complete disconnection whether using wired or wireless links until a reboot or power reset. This has been ongoing for several years (well past warranty). The issue began about a year ago, occurring roughly monthly, but it would automatically restart with little downtime. Now I’m checking this every other day, rendering it unusable. I’m considering a replacement and exploring Wi-Fi 6E options. Requirements: mesh network capability. A Cat7 cable runs between the two sites. Current service is 1G download / 80Mbps upload from Comcast, potentially upgraded to 2G in the future. Need an off-the-shelf product. I’m not comfortable with extensive setup or tuning. I’m retired and prefer reliable, plug-and-play solutions. Previously enjoyed streaming services like MythTV and SageTV, but now just want consistent performance. Travel is frequent, so a set-and-forget system is essential. Must include a local admin page. Budget should stay under $200 (current Amazon price was around that range), ideally not exceeding $500.

It might be the power supply unit that's the issue, much cheaper than replacing the router. I'd really skip buying a new one if possible, since WiFi 7 is just around the corner and it should outperform WiFi 6e significantly.

Not a power supply malfunction. The two units were swapped and experienced the same problem. Why wait for WiFi 7? You require devices that support WiFi 7 to benefit from any upgrades. A newer model doesn’t always mean better. Plus, I need something right away!

Same issues apply to WiFi 6e too. Most gadgets can't handle 6GHz. I think full 6GHz adoption will probably come later than WiFi 7. 6GHz isn't great for mesh networks because it has limited range and penetration. That means routers or satellites would need to be placed very near each other. I’d just stick with regular WiFi 6 equipment and save on the upgrade.

Not really. The previous gear was outdated and stopped functioning. It felt disappointing to deal with constant troubleshooting instead of getting a straightforward solution for a basic issue. If anyone wants to know what I switched to, it’s the ASUS ZenWifi ET8. So far, it’s performing well.
