Hey there! So I'm getting ready to build a PC and have picked out most of the parts like the motherboard, RAM, GPU, SSD, etc., but I'm still unsure about the CPU choice. Specifically, I'm torn between the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and the Ryzen 3 3200G. In my country both models are pretty similar in price, which is confusing. The Ryzen 5 2400G seems older with more cores, while the Ryzen 3 3200G is newer with Zen Plus architecture. Another point that's puzzling me is the graphics: the Ryzen 5 2400G has a Vega 11 with 11 GPU cores, whereas the Ryzen 3 3200G has a Vega 8. The Vega 8 on the 3 is newer compared to the Vega 11 on the 5. Also, I know I'll be using this PC for everything from games and productivity to programming and video editing. My setup details are: motherboard from Gigabyte, dual 4GB RAM in dual-channel mode, a 450W power supply, 5TB M.2 drive, 1TB HDD, an optical drive, and I'm reading this from you. The IPC boost from Zen+ isn’t enough to compensate for missing SMT support, so I’d still choose the 2400G over the 3200G. Thinking about your future use, I recommend holding off until the Zen 2 APUs are released, or opt for a used Dell Optiplex with an older i7, paired with an SSD and a GTX 1650 (or a 750Ti if you can’t afford it more).
2400G offers better performance since the upgrade from Zen to Zen+ isn't significant. The technology isn't newer compared to Zen 2 APUs, even though it's also named Vega. What really counts is memory speed—GPUs consume a lot of bandwidth and rely on system RAM for efficiency.
the 2400g model performs well, the vega 11 igpu is extremely capable and clearly surpasses the vega 8 significantly, even on the older zen arch. however, neither reaches peak performance, unless you consider an upgraded optiplex—otherwise i’d still look for older prebuilt options or comparable setups for your needs. 8gb of ddr4 isn’t ideal these days and the gigabyte b450m also falls short.
