Considering a switch from DDR4 to DDR5 could be beneficial. Right now you're using 16 GB of overclocked DDR4 at 3600mhz on a B450 Tomahawk with Ryzen 5 3600 and a 3060TI. You're also weighing CPU options like Ryzen 5 5600x or Ryzen 7 5800x. Upgrading would likely require a new motherboard. It's good to think ahead and discuss these changes before making any decisions.

The am4 platform remains quite strong. Upgrading would only make sense if you aim for future compatibility, like switching to DDR5 or AM5 (or LGA 1851). Honestly, if you're planning to use DDR4, it's probably still sufficient now. Consider moving to a 5800x for better performance. Unless you're facing any problems, it might not be necessary to upgrade at this time.

To reach the latest upgrades, you’d first have to enhance your MOBO to a B550 series or equivalent. Your current MOBO can’t handle DDR5 or Ryzen 5/7 components.

You should consider moving to Ryzen 7000/9000 since AM4 chips don't work with AM5 boards. For gaming upgrades, a 5700X3D or 5800X3D is probably the best choice, making DDR5 unnecessary. If you want additional AM5 features like PCIe 5.0 or USB4, it might be worth exploring other options. Otherwise, sticking with AM4 keeps your gaming CPU options solid.

I aimed to transition to DDR5 on AM4 by building a completely new system. Despite modest hopes for significant gains, I invested thousands of dollars in the process.

Refers to the B650 processor. B550 remains AM4 and uses DDR4 technology.

AM4 is compatible with DDR5 since the beginning of its release, though it's important to note that DDR4 and DDR5 have different connectors and performance differences. DDR5 RAM isn't much faster than DDR4 and is also significantly more costly.

Sure thing, you could definitely upgrade from DDR4 to something like 5000MHz... but only after testing it! 😄 (Just don’t try this without proper precautions, lol)

He already has a Ryzen 5 3600, and a BIOS update on the motherboard would easily support a Ryzen 5000 series CPU.

DDR5 and DDR4 offer identical speeds, while DDR5 delivers higher processing performance, though their combined speed remains nearly the same.
