Hello everyone, I’m evaluating potential upgrades for my processor. I’m currently using an i5-7500 on an ITX case with a GTX1070 and 16GB RAM. I’m considering a performance boost by switching to an i7-7700K. I’m wondering if it’s worth the investment compared to saving money and opting for an AM4 ITX board with a Ryzen 5 5600X or 5600G. The main concern with the latter is that I’d also need to replace the RAM, making it significantly more costly than just getting the i7-7700K. My usage is mostly light—about 20-30 Chrome tabs and occasional background tasks—plus some gaming. I don’t need top-tier performance for modern games at 1080p, just enough to run them smoothly.

Upgrading from a 7700k offers solid performance. If you sell the CPU and board, you could get a 3900x or 5900x with DDR4. A budget B450 board with BIOS flashback is also an option. However, sticking with the 7700k seems fine—just be mindful it’s hotter than the 7500. Consider swapping to a 7700k (it may overheat), upgrade the GPU to a GTX 1070, and get a monitor in 4K or 1440p. This setup will boost your system for gaming and productivity. The 7700k works, though it might cause some bottlenecks; just keep FPS low.

Your 7500 seems to be using DDR3, which is unusual since most boards were DDR4. Also, avoid getting a 5600G unless you really need the integrated graphics on it—it's a much slower processor than the 5600 or 5600X.

You're considering the 7700K versus the 7700 for a budget of £135. It's worth thinking about whether the 7700 offers better value compared to the 7700 priced at £90. Also, keep in mind the motherboard can't handle overclocking and your case is an ITX model with decent cooling.

It may not be the quickest option, but it should function with a Ryzen processor. It will run for a reasonable period before you need to upgrade the RAM to improve performance.

These 8 thread chips aren’t the best choice for smooth gaming; I’d advise stepping away from these sites since a 7700k at 135 lbs feels like a huge loss. A 7700 at 90 is much better and more affordable. Don’t waste your money either. Just to clarify, used units often drop around 50 lbs. What’s your budget? Either way, leave those platforms behind—they’re not worth it.

The issue with upgrading to Ryzen is the significant price increase, particularly for motherboards in the UK, especially ITX models. The most affordable options I found were around £115, followed by £160 for the 5600X. In comparison, the i7-7700 costs £90 and the i7-7700K is £125, eliminating the need to replace the motherboard.

It fits perfectly with a B550 board and a Ryzen 5600. Use the existing slow RAM and stop there.
