You just started playing GTA V with friends online. Your current setup is decent but not top-tier. You're using an AMD Athlon X4 760K CPU and a Sapphire Radeon R7 265 GPU. If you want to improve performance, consider upgrading to the 4790K CPU or the 970 GPU. Both options should help boost your frame rate significantly. Thanks!

When choosing a game, it's usually best to opt for the larger GPU. For your situation, I suggest going with the 970. If you decide to change the CPU, you'll also need to update the motherboard. Unless your PC is used only for gaming, an i7 should work nicely.

I nearly have the same sections as you and I’m planning an upgrade too. Going for the 4790k will definitely boost your FPS significantly.

I use it mostly for gaming and 3D modeling. I need to play GTA at full settings with smooth frame rates.

Upgrading to a 970 will cause bottlenecks with that AMD CPU. Switching to a 4790k means you’ll face limitations from the 265. It’s wise to plan ahead and then upgrade your GPU and CPU later. For cost savings, consider the i5 4690K—a top gaming CPU at a much lower price than the 4790k. The 970 is ideal for GPU needs.

Consider a 4690k along with a 290 or a 290x option.

Consider I5 4440 H81MP33 and the 960 4 GB or 970 variants.

I recommend saving up for a 4790k and a 290x. Unless you're interested in shadowplay or PhysX, it's not worth waiting longer to get a 970. My overclocked 290 runs just as well as my friends' 970, and I only spent $300 on it. They can find it on sale for under $250 at Newegg. If you need to upgrade something right away, go for the i7 first—it’ll help with 3D modeling and boost your FPS in GTA V. Personally, I aim for around 60 fps, and your card should reach that. I’m not entirely sure what settings will work best, but experimenting after upgrading would be smart. Eventually, I’d move to a 290/290x. By then, the 300 series might be unavailable, saving you money compared to the 200 series, while the 970 is likely still too expensive. My current settings keep me steady at about 60 fps in the city, never dropping below 50-52 fps even in dense foliage. My friends' 970 and another's 780ti experience similar performance drops there.
