6700K and GTX 1080 make a solid pairing. You can always upgrade the CPU and GPU separately. Maybe I misread the issue...

Are you experiencing issues or underperformance with your 6700k? If not, you're investing in unnecessary costs. A 1080 remains compatible with today's chips, and experts suggest it will work well for the upcoming generation as well.

I can only increase performance slightly and there are several games that would gain from a better CPU.

I understand but I’d like to play Witcher 3 on high settings at 1080p and 144fps. It’s not quite up to the mark, even with G-sync enabled. The smoothness still feels a bit off, averaging about 110 fps instead of the expected higher frame rate.
