I purchased a PC in 2018 with these specifications and have started to feel the need for improvements while playing Battlefield 6. The game runs adequately but occasionally experiences lag, audio issues, and crashes between maps. While there could be other reasons, it seems upgrading is necessary. I prioritize good graphics and minimal input lag on my 2560x1440@165Hz or 144Hz display, especially for FPS titles like Battlefield 6/Apex. I also rely on Nvidia graphics cards.
I’m unsure whether it makes sense to upgrade parts of an older machine or if a pre-built system would be better. Since I don’t build from scratch, I’m seeking advice here.

If you choose to stick with your current setup, you’re limited to just two upgrade paths: CPU and GPU. Your i7-8700K uses an LGA1151 socket and works with Intel CPUs from the 8000 and 9000 series.
The i9-9900KS offers the most significant CPU upgrade, providing two additional cores and a higher frequency, though it comes at a cost of around $300–400 on major retailers like Newegg or eBay. It may not deliver the substantial FPS improvement you’re seeking.
For your GPU, the Geforce 2080 Ti typically achieves about 70 FPS on average, with a slight dip to 50 FPS at 1440p. Switching to the Geforce 4080 could raise that number to well over 100 FPS. This model also eliminates the need for an adapter since it uses the new Nvidia 12-pin connector.
Your aging CPU might limit performance, but you should see a noticeable jump in FPS. If you plan to build a system later, the Geforce 4080 remains capable of handling modern games at 1440p.
Also, verify your RAM speed in the BIOS and ensure XMP is enabled for optimal performance.

The cost of RAM has reached its lowest point ever. That being the case, I would purchase the necessary parts and then contact a PC or laptop repair service to have them assemble it for you at a modest charge if you prefer not to handle it yourself.
