I'm considering improving my Ryzen 5 3600 running on an MSI B450 Gaming card. The goal is to see if a better GPU will boost performance noticeably, especially since I've already upgraded to an RTX 3080 and expected solid gains from a GTX 1070. However, the results haven't matched expectations. My friend with similar specs or a slightly weaker GPU (RTX 3070 with 5600 MHz) seems to perform better at higher resolutions. Online comparisons suggest my games might be more CPU-dependent, which could be limiting. I have ample RAM and SSDs for games, so the remaining factor is likely the processor. I haven't kept up with recent CPU news recently, so I'm looking for the best current option within a $300 Canadian budget (about $223 USD). If a more affordable upgrade offers better value, I'd prefer it. Additionally, my chipset appears compatible with the new components based on quick searches.

Did you attempt to play the game your friend uses at 1440p as well?

It's not unexpected that the 3080 feels excessive for 1080p; you'll likely hit more CPU limits compared to 1440p. Unless it leads to stutters or impossible frame rates, upgrading isn't necessary.

I'm playing at 1080p but my setup only has 1440p displays.

I knew the 3080 was too much for 1080p, but I’m still confused about why it should help at higher resolutions. If I went to 1440p, would I actually see better FPS or would I still need a CPU upgrade to reach decent performance? Also, your HP Reverb G2 in VR was another factor that influenced my decision. You mentioned getting 165Hz displays and feeling frustrated because you can’t squeeze more frames without a noticeable drop. I’m not claiming steady 160 FPS, but I’d say around 100–130 would be ideal for the experience you’re aiming for.

Secure a 5800X3D, issue resolved. You're particularly challenged at 1080p since the 3080 handles it at 40% before hitting CPU limits. I'm confident you'll maintain comparable FPS at 1440p than at 1080p, even with ultra settings enabled.

For instance, I recently returned to the squad and am struggling to maintain 60 fps or higher throughout the game. I had to lower my quality settings.

It shouldn't drop below 1440p unless the CPU is struggling heavily—checking game usage would clarify if multiple cores are heavily utilized while the GPU remains under 30%. If performance matches ARMA III standards (similar to what you mentioned), the issue likely lies with the CPU. As @PDifolco noted, a 5800X3D is ideal for gaming, though it might exceed your budget. A 5600X or 5800X in that range should still deliver strong results.

Budget constraints weren't noticed, just a 5700X increase needed—under 300 Canadian rubles.

But essentially you're trying to imagine it. Before getting the 3080, would there have been another GPU option available, and at this point, wouldn't you've had higher performance in those titles? Or are people talking about a bottleneck situation where the 3080 is so strong that I only utilize about 40% of its power, leaving the rest unused? That would mean I'd need a better CPU to squeeze out more frames regardless? Yes, I do play VR games on an HP Reverb G2, which was the main reason for my purchase, and I also plan to upgrade for non-VR titles.
