i replaced my old motherboard because it stopped working. I upgraded my setup from 6700k / z270 to 5900x / B550. Some other components came from the previous board; the ram model is vengeance led, with speeds of 3200, 16, 18, and 18 MHz. At the same clock speed, i can reach up to 3600 MHz. My main thoughts are: first, appearance matters; second, performance—can i lower timing to a CL16 while keeping speed with CL18? Or should i search for another brand with better timing, like hyperx CL17 or used gskill tridentz (neo) models ranging from CL16 to CL17?

It seems like you're comparing two setups. Mostly, there won't be a significant functional change between them. If you manage to raise your 3200 CL16 kit to 3600 on the new board, follow that path.
