The upcoming 5090 laptops are launching, but if you're upgrading from an older 3080 Ti model, you'll want mobility and the ability to run at maximum settings like 1440p. You're considering two paths: buying a used RTX 4090 for a cheaper price now or pre-ordering a 5090 for higher performance later. Your setup is mainly for desktop use, occasionally taking it on the go, but often replacing a desktop. You also do video editing and rendering with Adobe tools. Deciding between the two depends on your budget and future needs. If you're looking for strong performance, the 5090 seems promising, possibly matching or exceeding the 5070 Ti/5080 desktop GPUs. I have some thoughts and recommendations to share—please let me know.

They recently had a big discount on laptops. If I'm being honest, there might still be some left. They're also offering free keys for the Assassin's Creed new game. Based on recent trends, I think the New 50 series laptops will cost more with less value.

Yeah, you're likely on the right track. If I'm prepared to invest $4gs plus for a laptop, shouldn't I opt for the top model? It's pretty clear that the GPU in a 4090 laptop is about 50-60% better than my current 3080 ti laptop, which makes a big difference. As for other aspects, probably nothing else matters much, except maybe some AI features that might not really help much in the end.

The 50 series in laptops seems likely to be a major overhaul compared to the desktop release, yet with even lower performance per generation and possibly reduced efficiency. Still, coming from a 30 series experience it might be worthwhile. Keep in mind the price versus performance balance—those 40 series models are dropping significantly in price, and I question whether the 50 series will match that speed (4-5% is commonly speculated but wait for reviews) while offering more money.

Yeah, I think that's the smart thing, wait for some reviews, if it's like 20-25% better at 1440p+ I think it'd be worth it plus I don't really like going back generations, but a killer deal is a killer deal. I was thinking the model with the AMD 9955HX3D and with RTX 5090, seems like the best combo or at least one of them, other would be the U9-285HX/5090.

I'm a really picky laptop consumer, so I tend to get into everything about them when I buy. I want to know all the power limits, display specs, storage and RAM upgrade possibilities and serviceability, crapware.... I typically look for a review in which they tear the thing down once the benchmarks are done. (Notebookcheck.net is great for this btw) That's why I'm completely ignoring the fact that some 50 series machines are up for pre order. There's way too much to be unsatisfactory about a laptop to just jump on board sight unseen.

Absolutely, I completely agree—I just don't enjoy waiting either. With the current state of GPUs, it's definitely the best option. I could go for a desktop, but laptops are much more convenient for me. I don't need the top-of-the-line specs for 4K, so a laptop makes more sense. As I mentioned, if the benchmarks for the 5090 laptop GPU match those of a 5070 Ti desktop or a low-clocked 5080, that would be great. I'm hoping for something similar, and I guess we'll see.
