Hello, good day. Someone is suggesting I upgrade my i7 6700 to match his i7 5820k setup (using X99 G1 WIFI). My current specs are: i7 6700 (non-K, regular), GTX 1070 ASUS Dual 32GB 2133MHz, G-SKILL PSU 850, EVGA Bronze, 3TB SSD (for OS and demanding games), Gigabyte Z170X gaming motherboard, 3 rev 1.1. I have three monitors and often multitask—watch videos, listen to Spotify, use WhatsApp Web, chat occasionally. I usually stream Borderlands 3, Apex Legends, World of Warcraft, Genshin Impact, Ghost Recon Wildlands, and CP:2077. Sometimes I struggle with performance because my CPU hits 100% while the GPU isn’t fully utilized. I need a better CPU pairing for this workload and GPU setup. Thanks a lot.

If it's free... why not? I own that combo (5820k/GTX1070) and it’s been tough to make the case for an upgrade. But I don’t play videos while gaming. I haven’t run into any problems otherwise. I often back up photos from Lightroom and upload them to cloud storage without issues. I also play at 1440p, which naturally pushes more load on the GPU. You can overclock the 5820k as long as someone has a good cooler. Sure, newer CPUs might be faster, use less power, smell better out of the box, etc. Still, I can’t justify spending over $2,500 on a new setup. Partly because I can’t even afford a modern GPU.

If it's completely free, you're welcome to try it. A modest setup—around 200-300mhz—would get you back to single-core 6700 performance, and you can easily push it further.

Let me help you compare these processors. The 6700 is a mid-range chip, while the 5820K offers higher performance. If you're looking for better speed and efficiency, the 5820K could be a stronger choice. Consider your specific tasks—gaming, streaming, or heavy workloads—to decide which fits your needs better.

I've never pushed a CPU beyond its limits before, and it makes me nervous 😅

This compact overclock reaches performance similar to an i7 6700 but with two extra cores and four additional threads. Only a minor adjustment is needed. The 5820k is a straightforward overclocker, requiring minimal changes to hit high speeds. The main risk is going too far—such as setting it at 1.1v instead of 40v—and then needing to reset the CMOS.

I'll consider this, I'm sure I'll agree to the deal. Just need a few more perspectives, thanks.

It's actually quite good. The 5000 series looks well done, just needs a solid cooler. That’s why I’m puzzled your friend is giving up the 5 series for the 6… I’m not sure.

I run Cinebench R15 on a single core to check CPU performance. An i7 6700K gives 180 while an i7 5820K scores 139. Performance drops significantly if the game doesn’t use extra cores. In comparison, a recent R5 5600X achieves 258.
