Hello! I have a setup like this: i5 6500 noctua nhd15s, 2*8GB RAM, 2133mHz Kingston HyperX Fury MSI B150M Pro VDH evga gtx 1050 Ti, NZXT H510 Corsair vs550. I’m planning to upgrade the motherboard and CPU to a GPU later. I’m torn between the Intel Core i5-10400F and the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Both are around the same price in my area. Which one would be better? Thanks, E.
I currently possess 10600k (through a TV gaming setup) and earlier had a 3600 non-X model. It seems the choice between CPUs isn't too significant. You might want to check benchmarks to find out which performs better in specific scenarios, though they'll likely be similar enough to not matter much. Some quick notes: Verify if your Noctua cooler supports AM4 mounting—older models didn’t. If not, you’d need it for the 3600X. On the Intel side, the next release of the successor to 10600k is coming soon this quarter. It will mark the first microarchitecture upgrade after Skylake, promising a substantial increase in IPC. From AMD's perspective, there are more possibilities to upgrade the CPU later without needing a new motherboard, should that become necessary.
At least the RAM remains fairly affordable, making it a viable choice to swap out regardless of CPU selection. Consider disposing of both the new RAM and the old parts together. While current claims about its effectiveness are uncertain, early testing suggested that even slower RAM could boost performance by adjusting the clock frequency asynchronously.
