I understand a few of you are deep into Linux, and you might see Windows users as if they were Apple fans. I don’t know anything about Linux, but I’m curious—what could I be overlooking?

For everyday tasks such as browsing, watching videos, and gaming, you won’t miss a thing. If you’re a developer, the Linux terminal stands out over the command prompt. Most Linux distros are free, while Windows 10 can cost you around €100. Usability depends on personal preference—some prefer Windows File Explorer.

Run it on a vintage laptop or in Virtualbox, and see how it performs. You can also use live CDs of popular distributions to try it on your primary computer.

I handle tasks on Windows. I checked capabilities for Linux and attempted VM testing with a new system or LiveCD/LiveUSB.

This involves system administration tasks, not typical developer work. People usually rely on PowerShell or Bash for such operations.

Someone who can change the operating system can prioritize a better interface because the built-in one might not meet their needs.

Linux offers native SSH features, it’s more efficient in memory usage than Windows, which helps run smoother systems and supports many Linux virtual machines. I personally use Git Bash on my Windows machine at work and have developed a liking for it. Some developers here would love to switch if possible.

Scenario 1: Ideal Choice If your system runs smoothly on Windows and meets your regular tasks, you’re not missing anything significant. There’s no compelling reason to switch unless you’d like to support free, open-source software by choosing Linux over Windows. This shift can encourage more community involvement and a healthier, transparent software environment for everyone. If this isn’t important to you, then your decision stands.

Scenario 2: Natural Curiosity If you’re intrigued and wish to satisfy your curiosity, go ahead and test Linux. You can try booting from a live USB for a brief experience or install it in a virtual machine like Virtualbox. This approach lets you explore without major commitment.

Scenario 3: Legacy Hardware If older devices struggle with the newest Windows versions, consider lightweight Linux distributions such as Debian 9 Stretch with Xfce or Xubuntu 18.04 LTS that fit your setup better.

Scenario 4: System Crashes Scenario If you encounter frequent crashes unrelated to hardware failure, Linux often offers greater stability compared to Windows.
