I received a free Dell OptiPlex 3040 mini PC with a 6th generation i3 processor. I’m trying to figure out which CPUs are compatible and would like to upgrade it, so I’m happy to help.

It works with an i7-6700K but struggles to keep it cool because its cooler is weaker than the one included with the 6700. This could be a problem.

It includes the H110 chipset but only Intel 6th generation CPUs are compatible. That means you can upgrade with any 6th gen i5 or i7. The stock cooler should work for i5, but if you're using an unlocked CPU or higher-end model like an i7, consider a better cooling solution.

You could rather upgrade Ram, from 4GB to 8GB ? or 8 to 16GB ? And moving to ssd would be a great move (if it's currently using HDD). Much better move than the cpu upgrade. Edited October 19, 2023 by leclod

I prefer keeping the CPU at 65 watts or less because that’s the range the cooler can handle. I’m looking for a list that shows the available settings.

He already has 16 gigs and an SSD, all I require is a CPU upgrade.

It seems you're referencing a list of microarchitectures for Skylake. The numbers suggest possible clock speeds like 6400, 6500, 6600, or 6700 MHz. This information was last updated on October 19, 2023, by leclod.

The list shared by @leclod covers a wide range but lacks the K suffix. For 6th gen processors, the TDP is 65W without the K, rising to 91W with it. Are there any other upgrades on your mind? Also, what are your intended uses for this item?

I’m aiming to boost its performance to the limit. This compact PC will go a long way for your friend who can’t afford one. The Intel Core i3 processor isn’t great, but I’ll optimize it for browsing and streaming.

16GB RAM, SSD drive. It seems the CPU is what’s missing. Any thoughts on a GPU? If not, consider either the i5 6600 or the i7 6700. On eBay, the i5 is significantly cheaper at about $30, while the i7 costs around $50 to $70. Either option will definitely boost performance. Good luck with your search! Don’t forget to share your experience later.
