Consider the XYZ DualWAN router for reliable connectivity.
I’m not seeking the most expensive options, but I can suggest a Dual WAN router suited for backup internet. It should switch to a secondary connection when the first fails, and it must support DYNDNS. Linksys isn’t reliable—I’ve heard a lot of complaints about their service. It’s been a while since they were great, and their support is notoriously slow. You’ll need to wait about five days for a Tier 1 escalation, which isn’t ideal.
Consider using PFSense or Untangle Systems. You can purchase their devices or opt for an older PC.
I own this router personally. It has performed reliably. It offers Dual WAN and DDNS features. You can also connect via 4G LTE through USB if needed. Its performance is solid, the interface is straightforward to use, and it seems Synology is managing well.
Configurable routing options are available. Many MikroTik hex gr3 devices are affordable and offer flexible monitoring capabilities.
Avoid linking routers together to prevent double NAT settings and the resulting hassle.
I understand but... could it be possible? I mainly want to keep things exactly as they are.
Consider turning off NAT and firewall on the second router, then configure a static route on the Synology device, and adjust the firewall settings to avoid blocking the address range behind that second router.
