I was going to either purchase the: R5 5600 with a B550 motherboard, or i3 12100f with MSI PRO B660M-A DDR4 I'm focusing more on the intel CPU for upgradeability and price/performance and was wondering if it's worth waiting until AM5 is announced to see if there are any deals (I know there has just been a ryzen sale)

Currently, the only practical thing to focus on is whether you plan to upgrade in about six months from now, depending on your schedule. A 12th-gen processor is excellent and should last several years. DDR5 won’t be relevant soon, at least not right now.

If you have time, I’d wait too, just to observe what offers emerge as stores attempt to clear out their existing components. AM5 is expected to debut the 7000 series without a solid price point, and the 7600x should be the most affordable option on the market. If it matches your budget, it could become an extremely attractive CPU based on the current reports.
