Consider the benefits of upgrading to PCIe 4.0 and weigh them against your needs.
You have a 3080 Ti and a Ryzen 7 3700X, considering an upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Your current board only supports PCIe Gen 3—wondering if moving to a Gen 4.0 board is worth it or if it's better to just swap the CPU out.
The difference is minimal, around 1-2%. Changing the board isn't worth the effort.
PCIe 3.0 is sufficient. The 3080ti isn't improved by PCIe 4.0 (refer to https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidi...s-scaling/ ). The main advantage of PCIe 4.0 is quicker storage speeds, but it rarely matters in regular use unless you handle a lot of data or large files.
What do you think about upgrading the CPU? It could definitely make a difference.
I'd be waiting till after the AM5 release first, prices on AM4 gear will likely drop pretty fast once AM5 gear is released, so you might be able to save ~$100 on the CPU upgrade. It's a pretty good upgrade and everything, it's just not currently price effective
The only concern I have with AM5 is that it's DDR5 only, right? The prices for DDR5 don't seem to be decreasing anytime soon. I was planning to mention AM5 as well, but since it appears the focus is more on upgrading the board and CPU, I thought that might not be the best approach.
I wasn't asking for an upgrade to AM5, just to hold off until it launches and grab the last-gen rigs when they hit the market. AMD has a track record of heavily discounting older components before new releases, so a 5800X3D could be a solid choice. DDR5 won’t drop to the low-end DDR4 prices (like 3200MT/s CL16) anytime soon, though it has seen a significant price drop recently. A 32GB 5600MT/s package is now around $200, matching the cost of a high-end DDR4 32GB unit and dropping noticeably. It won’t be practical for ~$1000 builds anytime soon, but progress is being made.
