I don’t use aftermarket cooling solutions. I’m using a standard all-in-one unit. I’d worry about leaks and I can’t risk replacing a $4k system if water damages it.

However, reducing the CPU's overclocking might not impact frame rates. If it doesn’t, it suggests the GPU is the main limiting factor. And reaching 80 frames per second really pushes systems to their limits.

That's why your 8700k still works well enough. It feels strange how much harder the GPU needs to be for that small tweak compared to the previous settings.

More practically, instead of a major platform switch, consider upgrading to a 9900K and holding off until Intel releases a more impressive chip. Perhaps AMD will catch up soon enough, but that’s uncertain.

I’m likely to receive something, but it won’t replace my six cores. I still have a four-core processor that I’d like to upgrade. The i9-10900k appears to be built for the kind of tasks I enjoy—adding extra content to my modded and custom-built games. These games mainly use two cores and require high-frequency performance. The only issue is cooling; my Dark Rock Pro 4 on a shelf might not be sufficient. It could need a 360mm AIO, which adds another expense. I’ll wait a while before committing about $1000 for a CPU that might not make much of a difference. I plan to upgrade to a 3080 Ti because I need significantly more power and a newer HDMI connector. With HDMI 2.1 I can stream 4K at 120Hz on my OLED TV, while a 2080 Ti won’t support it. If it did, it would struggle to reach 120Hz at 4K anyway. I’ve been aiming for 4K at 60fps for years now; it will settle around 4K at 120Hz. I removed my 5.1GHz module from an i7-8086k and ran some tests—only modded/building games see benefits, except for AC:O. The biggest gains come from 3D rendering, which I no longer use. I suggest saving your money and opting for a RTX 3080 Ti instead. If you’re just a few frames below 144Hz at 1440p, consider upgrading now.
