According to the title, I plan to replace my small M.2 OS drive with a larger one. I looked for tools that can swap drives physically but found them difficult to use. This leads me to alternatives like installing a Linux distribution directly. I’m familiar with Ubuntu and recently tried Steam Deck OS, but my preference remains Windows 7 and XP. I’d like to keep Windows 7 running daily but don’t want to rely on outdated versions. If anyone who does daily drives has experience, please share their thoughts on which version performs best. I’m also willing to consider any unconventional options you might have.
Linux Mint, Pop_Os! and Zorin OS are good starting points. Zorin is especially suited for newcomers with plenty of resources. The best choice really depends on your needs for productivity and gaming.
On Linux, you can use games that need specific Windows updates by installing the necessary drivers and ensuring your system meets the requirements. This avoids issues similar to those with Windows 7 or earlier.
Well that's tricky question because on steamdeck there is proton and most games run just fine, some older titles work even better then on windows, and most denuvo/easyanticheat titles don't interest me, i had only one game that i couldn't Play on steamdeck. But i haven't Heard od any windows 7 program to work around missing updates or adding support for newer dx versions.
You regularly obtain updated releases of WINE/Proton, ensuring compatibility with the latest Windows updates. The development is highly engaged.
Thanks for the suggestions. Based on what I reviewed, Zorin OS appears to be the top choice for my needs, and I plan to compare it with two others.
the game needs windows 10 version up to x.xxx.xx and doesn’t work on linux. you might run it via wine, though performance will likely be bad. is there any way around that requirement?
WINE is regularly refined. It depends on you to meet these needs as effectively as possible. While it's definitely conceivable for a Windows creator to intentionally identify and prevent WINE access, such situations are extremely uncommon (to date). The most prominent example is Roblox.
