Hi everyone, I'm looking into upgrading my Ryzen 9 5950X to Ryzen 7 5800X3D or even Ryzen 7 7800X3D. I purchased the 5950X before the 5800X3D was released. I play games at 1440p with 240Hz, mostly FPS titles, and I have an RX 7900 XTX Nitro+ GPU. Any advice? Thanks!

You can enjoy games without streaming, it’s a solid improvement. If you’ve used AM4 before, it makes sense to keep going. For heavy rendering or streaming tasks, stick with the 5800X3D.

If you're aiming for maximum performance, consider selling your existing components and purchasing a new setup. The recommended configuration involves using 7800x3d boards with async ECL support, starting around $370 for a B650E Taichi. For games that don't require heavy caching, opting for a 7700 chipset with a mounting frame and adjusting the IHS to 1.6mm, running at 5.5-5.7 allcore can be more cost-effective.

You already own the 5950X, so upgrading to a 5800X3D makes little sense. Performance differences between games will vary, but the impact on rendering speed would be minimal on the X3D platform. For non-gaming work, sticking with the more stable chip is likely the better choice.

I own a 5900x and bought it just before the X3D 5800 came out, which made me a bit disappointed. After checking, the average performance improvement was about 10%. My CPU would probably be under 10%, so unless you have a buyer for your 5950x and a solid price on the 5800X3D, I’d say no to this upgrade unless you’re looking for a better deal.
