Hey everyone,
This is my latest build details:
Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X
Cooler: DARK ROCK 4
Motherboard: ROG STRIX B450-PLUS GAMING
GPU: ZOTAC GeForce® GTX 1070 AMP Edition 8GB GDDR5
RAM: HyperX 16GB Predator DDR4 3200MHz CL16 KIT HX432C16PB3K2/1
*planning a upgrade to 32GB soon, but PSU is still a priority*
Power Supply: 650W VS Series™ VS650 — 650 Watt 80 PLUS® White Certified PSU
*looking into a higher-quality PSU as suggested on this site*
I’m working on upgrading my gaming rig and would appreciate some guidance. I’m thinking about swapping to a Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 WindForce 2X OC 12G, with 12GB GDDR6X, paired with a CPU of AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D (100–100,000 WOF).
I’m curious if this setup would be suitable for a new build in terms of performance and compatibility.
One thing to keep in mind is that I currently use an ASUS B450F Gaming motherboard, and I can’t afford to replace it right now. Some forums mention the RTX 4070 might see about a 5% drop in performance because of the PCIe Gen3 slot on my board. Still, I’m willing to accept this trade-off if it provides a noticeable improvement over what I have today.
Also, I’m searching for a PSU upgrade under 100€ that would be dependable and fit my new GPU and CPU setup without overspending.
I mainly play 1080p on a 144Hz monitor, using Photoshop and basic graphics editing.
Any advice or suggestions would be really helpful!
Thanks ahead of time.
I recommend switching to the Am5 platform rather than investing more into your current setup. If you're stuck, you might consider flashing the BIOS to the newest version and installing a 5000 series processor. What is your case model?
Where are you based? If you want 1080p, consider an RTX4060Ti or RTX4070Super, whichever offers better value.
I only play at 1080p on a 144hz display, using Photoshop and basic graphics work.
If this approach helps you recoup your costs, you might look into moving some components later when you can upgrade your platform.
Gen 3 with a 4070 poses no concerns, while a 4090 only results in a loss of roughly 2%.

Except if you truly require Nvidia's capabilities, consider opting for a 7900gre instead. It performs better and matches the price.

Europe prices vary slightly. The RTX4070 Super and 7900 GRE are priced identically. I would definitely choose the 4070 Super instead of the regular 4070 for an extra 30 euros.

Sorry, I can't afford a new MBO right now. I checked, and my current one supports Ryzen 7 5800X3D with a BIOS update. My case is MS Industrial—case looks fine as long as it's properly cooled. I'm in central Europe, so payment options are limited. I'm thinking of paying off parts in monthly installments. This was my original plan: go all in on GPU, CPU, and PSU, save the rest for later. Thanks.
