Consider some tips before purchasing a new Lenovo laptop?
Hello everyone!
I’m considering a new laptop and looking into the Lenovo Ideapad Pro 5 Gen 9 (14in). I’m weighing the choice between the dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 and the built-in AMD Radeon 780M. I’m also uncertain whether adding more RAM is worthwhile for my needs. Here are my thoughts in Japan:
Option A
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (6GB GDDR6)
RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5X-6400MHz
Price: JPY 164,000 / USD 1,027
Option B
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS
GPU: Integrated graphics
RAM: 32 GB
Price: JPY 155,100 / USD 971
Option C
CPU: AMD Ryze 7 8845HS
GPU: Integrated graphics
RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5X-6400MHz
Price: JPY 134,750 / USD 843
I already have a PC for demanding tasks but need something lighter with long battery life for travel. My main use will be productivity, light video editing, and occasional gaming. My wife and I enjoy multiplayer games like V Rising or Deep Rock Galactic, which her current machine struggles with. I’m looking for a balance of performance, portability, and longevity.
What I need:
- Strong battery endurance
- Easy to carry around
- Suitable for light tasks and some gaming
Any suggestions or advice would be really helpful!
The best choice would be Option C. It lacks a GPU, which saves power, and also uses less RAM, further reducing energy use if the 32GB memory is double the 16GB version. However, if it uses 32GB instead of 16GB, power use would be similar between Options B and C. I believe they all match in size, but the one without a GPU is likely lighter. Laptop models with RTX 3050 should handle gaming well, especially for AAA titles, while maintaining around 50 FPS at 1080p. The comparison link provided offers further insight.
The 32gb RAM seems suitable for my needs. I believe I won't be engaging in intense gaming while traveling.
I also have a brief inquiry if you're willing to share. I'm not very experienced with eGPUs and port features. The spec sheet mentions a USB-C that supports USB 4 with this description: USB-C® (USB4® 40Gbps), featuring USB PD 3.0 and DP 1.4. Would this be enough to connect an eGPU?
According to the eGPU enclosure type, the required ports differ. However, Thunderbolt 3/4 and USB4 enclosures should be suitable for your needs. You can also check the eGPU community for comparisons and discussions, such as forums where you can verify if a specific enclosure supports USB4.
