I acquired two i7 3770K processors from an old PC and was thinking about selling them. I’m considering building a fully functional computer using one of them, thanks to the extra 4GB RAM, ATX size, and GTX770 graphics card. For a media center or NAS setup, I’m curious—can I use one of these for that purpose? Or are they outdated and better off with a more affordable 12th-gen Intel i3 and a mini ITX model? My main concern is the i7 3770K’s cooling in a compact media center with a downwind cooler, and whether I can get Windows 11 to run smoothly on it.
Thanks yeah fitting one in a small case would be hard I guess, hope there's still a market for this kind of old cpu, it was still great until win 11 :c (I know you can force install win 11 but it's unsupported so it might still be a deal breaker for a potential buyer)
Based on the type of content you view, a 3770K and GTX 770 might not be ideal for a media PC. They don’t support hardware acceleration for recent video codecs such as H265, VP9, and AV1, and they can’t handle those formats efficiently in software. As a NAS, they could function reasonably well if the motherboard provides good connectivity. However, you wouldn’t need the GPU at all. For a media PC processor, opt for a Kabylake (Intel 7th gen) or newer model.
At the e-waste recycling facility last summer, we processed all components older than Gen7 Intel chips. It’s unclear if anyone would be interested in purchasing them.
Unless you can source components at little or no cost, it doesn't justify the expense of constructing a new container.
