Hey there, I was thinking about swapping my old i7 2600k for a Ryzen 3950x build. The Ryzen 4000 laptops are getting a lot of attention lately. I noticed the Ryzen 4900Hs are pretty close in performance, with up to 8 cores, compared to the 3950x. I’m planning the upgrade in about a month and wondering which is better—go with the 3950x or hold off for the desktop CPUs from the 4000 series? What do you think? Thanks!

The mobile 4000 CPUs currently on the market are Zen 2, matching the desktop 3000 CPUs. The Ryzen 4000 on desktops should run on Zen 3, which may bring some performance gains. The main point is: Do you really need a new CPU now, or can you hold off? Presently, people expect Zen 3 to be released sometime in September, though it might take longer before it's widely available. In short: Can you wait until the end of the year for a fresh CPU?

Thanks for the update! I was thinking of using a 3950x for a while and planned to finish in 2-3 weeks, but I was open to waiting if the next version came out soon—though that would be around 8 months away. Now I’m considering going for a 3950x as soon as the market opens temporarily.

I suggest waiting. If you don’t find much in Zen 3, you’ll be able to secure a 3950x at a lower price once it releases. You didn’t care about it before, and Sandy Bridge remains solid even by current standards.

Thanks for the messages! I'll keep an eye on things until September. Yes, you're both right—I need a reliable upgrade that delivers value quickly. A better, more affordable option in just three months would make me happier than any regret. I'm hoping this time the selection will be even stronger!
