Hi,
I just discovered this gaming laptop on sale with 16 GB RAM that can be upgraded to 32 GB.
https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX00119730
Can I easily upgrade the RAM? Will it damage any warranty if I open the case? Do I need a specific RAM type for this model? I’m not sure how all the parts fit together.
Also, any tips? I haven’t owned a gaming laptop before or had to open one. Maybe I should consider getting a laptop cooler—what kind would you recommend? Thanks!

Yes, you'd need a specific kind of RAM for the upgrade. With only two slots, switching to 32 would mean taking out the existing 16 and putting in the new 32. You'll have to think about what to do with the old 16. How much improvement in speed are you anticipating when increasing from 16 to 32?

Check the RAM only if you realize you've reached its full capacity on the system. Perform some tests before making a decision.

Oh, I was thinking I’d add another 16 next to the existing one. Thanks for clarifying it works that way. Any RAM with 32 GB should fit in place of the current one?
I’m not sure what to do with the old 16—maybe keep it just in case I decide to upgrade later.
Since I spend a lot on video editing, and my preferred program is quite resource-heavy, I think having 32 GB is essential.

No,
not all 32 GB RAM you purchase will fit your system. You need the correct specification. The previous 16 GB model is unlikely to work in a modern PC, though it might function in another laptop. You can easily check your actual usage during video editing. If you're using less than half of your existing 16 GB, 32 GB might not be necessary. If you were using more, 32 could make sense. Some individuals show little concern for diminishing returns, while others are very cost-sensitive or have a strong desire for more RAM.

Thank you for the suggestion. I appreciate trying the 16 GB version first to see if it meets my needs before deciding on an upgrade.

I'll look into the amount of RAM used on this machine during my next update, thanks. The old PC with 16 GB always caused blue screens when editing videos, though maybe that wasn't just about the RAM. I'll check if video editing works well on the laptop before thinking about an upgrade. Appreciate the assistance!

You can always boost the pagefile when only slightly using up memory. However, if you spend long periods on the computer, it's best to completely resolve the problem. Low memory wouldn't cause a blue screen, it would make the editing software crash and show a warning, but shouldn't lead to a blue screen.
