I have a b450m motherboard with 2400mhz 8gb ram, a 3000mhz 8gb ram, a ryzen 5500 cpu, and an rx6800xt gpu. I'm considering upgrading and wondering which cpu to purchase if I buy the 9700x. My budget is around 700 dollars.

If you have the means, I recommend switching to AM5, which offers future upgrade possibilities and a more contemporary system.

Doing 9700x +32 GB with 6000MHz RAM could boost your FPS, but upgrading to AM5 might be more cost-effective compared to sticking with AM4.

With that GPU, you might not see much of a difference between the two. The point is future support. Your next GPU might require you to upgrade CPU. You have no upgrade path with AM4, so it is guaranteed you will have to do a full platform change. AM5 you might only have to worry about a CPU swap. Also as you are on B450, you are stuck with slower PCI-E for storage and graphics. You can always sell your current hardware, to help make up for some of the extra cost, as well.

I'm unsure if you'll be able to run games at the highest settings for the next few years without upgrading your GPU.

It's tough to give a definite answer. It really hinges on the game you're playing and the resolution you're using. Games are becoming increasingly challenging.

on another occasion I played Last of Us P1 and the game was utilizing 15gb of VRAM at 1080p maximum settings. i don't know, but i hope it works well for the next few years.

You may wish to experiment with graphics configurations. A few can require excessive resources even with minor visual changes.

A 9000 series non-X3D CPU will likely maintain comparable FPS to a 5700X3D. Based on my assessment, I’d suggest choosing the 9000 series for better long-term value. The decision really depends on your priorities—if you need immediate performance gains with minimal effort and budget, the 5700X3D is ideal. For those aiming for a future upgrade to a more flexible platform, the AM5 offers similar benefits but comes with higher cost and complexity.
