I’m considering moving to PC gaming because it offers much better performance than consoles. My main concern is the upfront cost, since I don’t have a computer yet and I’m trying to save up. I’m not wealthy, but I plan to buy one when I can. I’d love to know what others have experienced switching from consoles to PCs.

Consider investing more than this amount for the CPU. This excludes the monitor, but sure:

I changed my setup three years ago and saved a significant amount of money. I made some choices that didn’t always work out—like buying an expensive motherboard and Pentium initially, thinking it would double as a water cooler. Later I upgraded to an Xeon, but the original board became obsolete. My first priority was getting a Xeon E3-1231 V3 or better, with good CPUs such as i5 4690 (K), i7-4790 (K), i5-6500, i5-6600, or i7-6700 (K). For RAM I’d aim for at least 8GB DDR3 at 1333Mhz, preferably 16GB DDR4 at 2133Mhz. A GPU like RX470/480 or GTX960 with 4GB or 6GB would suit well. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

He doesn’t need a monitor right away. He can play on his TV now, assuming he already owns a console and a TV. Once he has enough money, he can upgrade to a good monitor. If you can afford both a PC and a monitor, that would be ideal too.

Search for budget gaming PCs on YouTube. You'll discover many useful tips there. Also, you can locate affordable components on EBay. If you're careful, you can purchase a full gaming system for around $300. (It's a challenge, and you'll need to use older hardware.) Or continue using consoles until you save enough.

Opt for consumer-grade CPUs like i5 6500, 6600, 6600K or some i7 4-series. Avoid Xeons for your initial setup.

We can tailor the project to your budget. If you sell your old console, you’ll likely have enough funds for a PC.

Thanks for the feedback. I plan to go with a consumer-grade CPU. My PS4 could be sold, and a big TV might be an option if needed, though I’d rather not focus on that. I have some cash available now but am keeping it tight for future savings. Maybe saving up a few months and using any extra funds toward a PC would be wise. Would $1,500 be sufficient? It seems like a reasonable target to reach by Christmas without hurting my savings. Thanks all for your input—I’m starting to look into new tech and will keep an eye out for updates.

You can explore this resource to assemble a PC. I provided the link: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/TQ7Dqk. It should support gaming at 1080p with high quality. You can add a monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc., as needed.
