Hello everyone, I'm here to share some thoughts on upgrading my system. I currently have an R9 5900X with an MSI 3080 SuprimX and 32GB DDR4 RAM at 3600MHz. I'm planning to keep running games smoothly at 1440p or even Ultra settings, but I want to know the best path forward without spending too much. Would switching to a mid-range AM5 processor be a good option, or should I consider adding more RAM? For the GPU, I'm uncertain whether a mid-range 40-series model is worth it now or if a lower-end 50-series might suit me better in 2025. Any advice would be really helpful!
Your setup is now quite strong, the next upgrade I’m eager about is the GPU, though even that seems a long way off from where we’re at right now. The 10GB of VRAM we had originally will be crucial for the 3080s. Better wait until there are better alternatives.
I believe there will be a long wait before you upgrade. First, focus on the GPU then move to a platform upgrade. The 3080 should still perform well for some time, particularly with upscaling. When the moment arrives, consider a card in the same performance tier but higher-end. Ensure it's a substantial improvement. A 1.5x upgrade is justified, while 1.15x or 1.2x won't be. Switching to AM5 is similar—just wait until your current setup can't keep up and then aim for something that significantly boosts performance. Likely next you'll upgrade to a mid-to-high range card. Only opt for the lower-end options if they're noticeably faster than your existing setup.
Alright, you're in the right place for what you already have. Upgrading to AM5 probably isn't necessary unless you're aiming for the next-gen GPUs or require over 144hz. For gaming, a 5700x3d might suit you better if you need top frame rates, but if you're targeting 1440p at 144hz with quality settings, it won't significantly change things.
That value is quite notable. Are you leveraging many processing units?
