Hi all, My rig is the following atm (an old rig actually with an updated GPU): CPU: i7 920 overclocked @ 3.6 GPU: evga gtx 1060 superclocked Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58-Extreme RAM: 12gb DDR3 triple channel Monitor: 1920 x 1200 PSU: 1200W Thermaltake Unfortunately my motherboard is probably dead so this is an opportunity to build a new machine. It is also a bit urgent because I am a software engineer and I am without a proper PC atm (apart from an old laptop and my wife's machine). I am interested in building a new machine that will be as much future proof as possible. A good motherboard with a powerful CPU that will be able to handle future GPUs. I mostly use my PCs for gaming, development and general desktop use under Linux and Windows (dual boot machine). I intend to use my gtx 1060 for some time until the new nvidia 3000 series and/or the competitors from Radeon come out. I know that my GPU will bottleneck my new system but since I play at 1200p 60hz atm it should be ok for now until I buy a more powerful next gen GPU. When next gen GPUs are available I would like to be able to upgrade to 1080p 144hz or 1440p 144hz which I suppose you agree that makes sense for today's PC gaming (I am a bit hesitant towards 4k 60 fps gaming but I might be wrong) Based on the research I have done so far I am more inclined to get a Ryzen CPU. My initial plan was to go for the Ryzen 5 3600x. But based on what I have already said I have doubts whether Ryzen 5 3600x is going to be powerful enough to support future GPU upgrades. After doing more investigation I feel that going for the more expensive Ryzen 7 3700x or even Ryzen 9 3900x might be a better choice. I realize that each of these 2 suggestions goes with a price increase but if it makes sense then it's fine by me. I am not the type of guy who updates his system every 6-12 months. Any suggestions for motherboard and RAM would be really appreciated. Thanks, George

What's your budget ? Where are you from ? There's also a high possibility that you'll need to replace the PSU too, what model is that ?

We lack detailed information about the Nvidia 3000 line, but the Ryzen 7 3700X seems ideal for it as it handles the 2080 Ti well. The ASUS ROG Croshair VIII Hero X570 will look great in it. It should deliver strong performance. For a more affordable setup, consider the Asus Prime X570-Pro with upgraded 16GB or 32GB RAM if you can afford it. Please share your budget and PSU model for a better suggestion.

I don't have a specific budget. My initial plan was to aim for sth mid range and this is why I had 3600x in mind. But if it makes sense in terms of longevity and support for future GPUs I am willing to pay for a 3900x. I understand this is a big difference in price but I am willing to pay the difference if it makes sense. If I have to give a number then a ceiling of around $1,000 for CPU, motherboard and RAM probably makes sense The PSU is a Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W. It's a 10 years old PSU but unless there is sth wrong with this one I don't see the reason to replace it since I think it still works just fine. Unless I am missing something of course. I am probably not interested in extreme overclocking so I assume sth up to a mid-range should be good enough for a motherboard. I know that Ryzen CPUs need fast RAM so I am willing to buy memory that will free all CPUs potential. Sorry for not providing specific prices but I can't say anything more before finalising which CPU I am going to use and which are my options based on that. Edited December 28, 2019 by GeorgeB.

Sure, you can opt for the B450 instead. I wasn't aware you were against overclocking.

I suggest considering the Corsair HX1200, 1200w 80+ plantinum. Your PSU is nearing the end of its lifespan, likely around 10 years, and replacing it could cause issues with other parts like the motherboard. Since it's past its expected life, upgrading might be safer rather than spending a lot of money.
