I understand Linux setup can require some effort but it tends to be more efficient than Windows. Linux Mint seems like a strong choice for a compact configuration due to its extensive support. You might opt for the 1070 for folding and any GPU that fits the system would work fine. A R9 380x isn't ideal for folding—I've tested it and found it underperforms compared to similar Nvidia cards. Before committing, check out the 1050; I suspect you'll also choose an Nvidia card on the other machine when comparing performance against a comparable AMD option. For optimal efficiency, a 1060 is likely the best overall choice. You could also try a lower model like Ivy, which functions well without needing the 3770K chip and helps reduce power consumption.
Power consumption remains manageable and I’ve set it up as a nas/folder inside a Walla-mounted case, though it’s not yet wall-mounted. My plan is to attach both Asus TUF armored mobos on the wall above my triple monitor setup. The 2060 Fe delivers around 60 fps at 7680x1080 resolution across most applications.
