Hi, I’m putting together my PC for racing in F1 and iracing, seeking advice on gear. I’ll probably use the 8nm CSL DD base. My questions are: 1. Which buttons on the wheel are essential or can a few key ones suffice? 2. Does a load cell kit for pedals really add value compared to standard setups? 3. I’m missing a shifter and other accessories besides the desk clamp—do I need anything else? 4. I plan to use a 46” 120hz 1080p TV that I haven’t used much. What’s best? VR, curved screen, or several monitors? I’ve never tried VR and would lean toward the latter two. For setup, starting from a desk makes sense; if space allows later, I might build a custom cockpit.

When driving F1-style cars, many adjustable settings are available for the driver. This makes choosing the right wheel important, particularly when using VR and losing visibility of your keyboard. Load cell breaks can provide a more accurate feel for car handling, though you can adapt to a non-load cell pedal if needed—depending on your budget. As long as you have the wheel, base, pedals, clamps, and power/PC cables, you should be fine. I favor VR simulations for racing or flight games because the immersive experience of being inside the car and seeing it in perfect detail is unmatched, even though current headsets have some drawbacks. I’ve noticed several great 3-monitor configurations that would be my second preference if VR wasn’t available.

Thanks for the input. Setting up multiple monitors seems like a big step, especially since I'm focusing on getting things up and running. I’m open to starting with a smaller budget but want to ensure a solid foundation. While I’m not sure about my enthusiasm for Formula 1, I’ve been a fan for over a decade and plan to give it a shot. In the end, I think I’ll dedicate most of my time to iracing or similar racing titles in real life.

Because you're considering investing a solid amount in a Fanatec setup as your initial project, it might be wise to reach out to specialized racing or simulation communities—like iracing forums, subreddits, or Discord channels—to clarify what you truly need. While the idea of buying once and using it only once holds some merit in the simulation space, making a poor choice early on can lead to far higher costs later, such as purchasing a Logitech G29 instead of a better option. On the other hand, whatever equipment you select will eventually require upgrades, so aim for a solid foundation that allows you to progress without starting over from the beginning.

I really want to dive into a community focused on sim racing. Before, I used a Logitech system for PS4 and Gran Turismo, but now I'm aiming for a deeper level of engagement.
