This game received a strong vote for Sins of a Solar Empire Entrenchment, which is part of the Trinity collection and other pre-Rebellion expansions. It remains my top pick among SoaSE titles. Rebellion’s mechanics often felt too reactive, while Diplomacy enriched the diplomatic options. The star bases in Entrenchment introduce fresh strategies without overly limiting fleet diversity. Fragile Allegiance offers a compelling experience if you’re comfortable with its older design. A modern update would be ideal—most current games let players completely destroy opponents’ planets by targeting them with large rock chunks.
The continuous gaming sessions are enjoyable. Aurora 4X offers a free battlefleet gothic experience with strong ratings as well.
I invested considerable time into Sins of a Solar Empire, which earns my endorsement.
Masters of Orion 2 would earn my approval, though it feels a bit dated. The main draw is its affordability today. It offered the same mix of growth and tactics that earlier Civ titles provided before visuals became overwhelming. I own some versions of Galciv and Stellaris, but they didn’t quite meet my expectations.
Star Ruler 2 is open source now and can be downloaded for free. One of the best space strategy games in my opinion. Then there is also Sword of the Stars. Star Trek Birth of the Federation with the Ultimate Dominion Mod is also worth a look if you are into Star Trek.
