Hey, for your setup with heavy Java workloads, you’ll want a CPU that handles multi-threaded tasks well. A mid-range to high-end processor like an Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X would be solid choices. If budget allows, consider a newer generation like the i7-12700K or Ryzen 7 5800X3D for better performance and efficiency.

Looking for a B550 motherboard paired with a Ryzen 3600 and a 5600X if possible.

Sadly, if you wish to retain your existing motherboard, the only viable options are a 6700K or 7700K, but they come at a significant cost.

Consider enhancing the motherboard before upgrading the CPU. If that's the case, let me know what you have in mind!

The motherboard can restrict CPU performance; if higher speed isn't needed, consider upgrading your system. A Ryzen 5800X would be suitable for heavy Java programs requiring many threads. Should you prioritize extra cores over threads, that's a good choice too. Do you want more power per core or more threads?

Core count also poses a major challenge since I handle many single-threaded operations.

Consider the Ryzen 5800X (8 cores / 16 threads) but opt for the Ryzen™ 9 5900 X (12 cores / 24 threads) if possible. For budget options, check out the 5600X or the last generation Ryzen 7 3800X.

We require both to support virtual machines running Java apps that demand strong CPU performance

In this scenario I would choose the Ryzen™ 9 5900X (8 cores / 16 threads) or Ryzen™ 9 5950X (16 cores, 32 threads). Allocating each VM its own set of cores/threads is beneficial—such as assigning 3 to 4 threads per VM if you have four, with one for the host. More threads are advantageous when running many VMs. If you require additional capacity, consider waiting to see what the new Threadripper releases offer or explore AMD or Intel server CPUs and last-generation Threadripper options.

I'm considering setting up a server to host all our VMs and include client VMs as well. Would that be a good idea? You mentioned compatibility with your motherboard, and I assume it works. Moving high-traffic Java apps to the dev environment sounds like a solid plan.
