Hello everyone, I’m planning a PC upgrade and want to make it work well for my needs. Right now I have an i7-3930K processor, an ASRock X79 Extreme motherboard, a 750W PSU, a Cosair H100 power supply, and a 32 GB Patriot Viper DDR3 RAM with 1600 MHz speeds. My graphics card is the Radeon HD 7970. I’m not mainly a gamer, but I do a lot of GPU-based modeling and need a system that lets me test algorithms locally before scaling up.

I also require a lot of screen space—five monitors are necessary so I can keep multiple data feeds open at once. I’m trying to stay budget-friendly and would prefer an AMD CPU while still getting a Nvidia GPU. I’m okay with used components as long as they’re Pascal-based on the GPU side.

I’m new to figuring out what looks like a good value after a while, since it’s been a while since I’ve followed the industry closely. I just need something that offers solid performance for my workloads without breaking the bank. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

The latest NVIDIA GPUs reach four displays, so you'll have to think outside the box for a fifth. Staying within budget: Keep in mind the PCPartPicker list—prices can shift.

Upgrade your CPU to a Ryzen 5 3600, install fresh RAM (Trident Z works well) and add an XT 5700 for the GPU.

You could consider a more outdated Titan model, as it won’t be optimized for modern workloads. Since you’re mainly doing machine learning with Python, performance gains from an older GPU are likely minimal.

The latest RTX lineup shines thanks to tensor cores, provided your models support mixed precision. Your monitor resolution is also important—if it's fHD, consider switching to a 4K display or combining it with another fHD screen for a smoother setup. Same area of workspace but more manageable.

Turing has significantly boosted performance for workstation tasks. Unless your application needs a particular Titan version, you won't see further gains. If you have a contract and wish to cut costs, that's fine.

I agree on the mixed precision aspect. I’ll need to look into it more. For the monitors, I’m considering a mix of 1440P and 1440P ultrawides. I’m aiming for a 5k ultra-wide display eventually and plan to use my two 1440P ultrawides first before switching. I might repurpose an old GPU until then.

During testing with my 2060S, switching to mixed precision boosted performance by double and reduced VRAM needs by using FP16 instead of FP32 for most values. Your monitors appear already set up well—an older GPU should suffice for the foreseeable future. Wishing you success with your build!
