Games need faster single-core speeds, while Xeons offer additional cores at slower speeds and lower power use, making them perfect for workstations and servers. This is why Xeons are considered "server" processors.

I understand, this aligns with what yaboistar said. Currently I can locate 16GB 3200 DDR4 RAM for about £75, an R5 3600 for roughly £150, and a solid B450 board such as the Tomahawk Max for around £100 in the UK.

This model matches the exact setup of an i7 from that time. It offers a 3.8GHz boost with four cores and eight threads. Generally performing well with a GTX 1070, but when high-end gaming or more challenging AAA games are needed, performance can lag due to the bottleneck.

Clock speeds should match. These engines are built for tasks that run on multiple threads. Gaming demands higher clock rates for each thread. Few games really benefit from multi-threading.

I upgraded to an Xeon and had a GTX 750ti before moving to a 960. I want the processor to remain functional for longer with GPU upgrades. Right now, I’m considering a Ryzen 3700x or an i7 9700K.

The i7 9700K offers its own advantages compared to older models.

Actually, what you mentioned isn't correct. You stated Xeons have more cores and lower clocks, but then clarified that Xeons with I7 configurations perform equally well for gaming. Also, Ryzen remains the superior choice within this budget.

3-4ghz works just fine these days. You don’t need a high clock speed. Xeons are suitable for gaming. Xeons also use a lot of power.
