I initially owned an AMD X4 860k and later upgraded to an Xeon 1231v3. It works well but limits my 1070's performance. I purchased the CPU, RAM, and motherboard for about £300. Prices for these components are unlikely to be this low again. I might upgrade in a year or so. What’s the best next step for me?

For a GTX 1070, consider upgrading to a Ryzen 7 3700X or an Intel i7 9700K. Server processors aren't suited for gaming. E5-2689 bottlenecks performance under GTX 1080 Ti and above.

It functions identically to an i7 4790, but this doesn't really align with gaming needs.

To get an upgrade in 2021 you’d need to wait until that year and then determine the optimal option available then.

The market is changing rapidly right now. If you were me, I’d just observe what happens next. However, the third generation Ryzen is currently the top choice.

In the coming year I’ll likely upgrade to more affordable older hardware. It depends on the situation. I’m just looking for solid suggestions on the latest CPUs available right now.

Certainly. It’s clear to see what others believe about today’s CPUs, especially if prices could fall on something like an i7 9700K. I want to make sure it’s a good investment for me if the cost is reasonable.

It's the amount I spent in 2015, probably. The Xeon cost £210, RAM £36, motherboard £32, and the cooler £16. The case was £16 too. Now an i7 is around £350. Seems like a good deal.

PCPartPicker list shows various components at competitive rates. AMD Ryzen 5 3600 offers strong performance for around £163.98. The MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX ATX AM4 board is available for £69.99. Memory upgrades like CCL’s DDR4-3200 pack cost about £74.55. All prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts. Total comes to approximately £308.52. This selection fits well within a budget near £300. The Xeon model matches modern GTX 1070 specs without needing high-end alternatives.
