The top CPU choice for your board with a BIOS upgrade is the 9900k. (Or 9900KFC or 9900KYS—whatever Intel named it to win the silicon lottery.)

Based on cost, top choices include the i7 8700(K), i7 9700(K)(F), and i9 9900(K)(F). Usually, high-end CPUs for 300-series boards are quite expensive for their capabilities. It might even be more affordable to switch to another system, such as purchasing a used AM4 CPU and board from eBay.

In short, there are two good CPU options for the board—8700(k) or 9900(k)—but both are expensive. Switching to an Ryzen am4 board with a 5600 chip costs around $180, while one of those CPUs is $150–200 and doesn’t offer much advantage. Also, your PSU poses a risk of damaging the system, so it’s best to replace it.

It lacks safeguards against overvoltage or component failure, letting anything outside specifications pass. If the PSU voltage goes wrong, it simply lets it through. It also fails catastrophically under heavy load and offers no protection against excessive voltage discharge. Designed as a Tier E unit because of that.

Thanks very much for the advice. If I can't locate an Intel CPU, I'll opt for AMD instead and explore options for a new PSU. Appreciate your help!

What's the budget? For the CPU, I won't pay more than $100 unless it's a used model. $100 is enough for a 3600(x) and a bit of luck. Right now, anything under 12 threads is usually not worth upgrading—preferably stick to a new system.
