Access points sharing the same name on a network don’t assist clients in moving between them. The problem lies in radio channels—since devices can only operate on one at once, they can’t easily discover alternatives unless all APs are on the same channel. A scan takes roughly half a second, during which the radio switches channels and must remain on each to detect nearby networks, preventing communication with the currently connected AP. Consequently, clients may experience inconsistent roaming performance. Unifi offers a feature where APs notify clients about other nearby APs they can connect to, highlighting the best option within the same system. This works only in environments where all APs share the same SSID.
