Some time back a Windows update stopped the direct plug-in cable from working properly, so I switched to an old wireless USB Wi-Fi adapter. I’m not sure if I still have one and wonder if buying another would be a good idea just in case.

Not that I know of. You’re going 5 feet over open air. You don’t need my special features. Lowball it.

Agreed, if its just an emergency backup for fixing any potential problems, no need to worry about it being fast. Although generally I find you need to go online to install the WiFi drivers in the first place, so I'm not sure how helpful this is. Losing wired ethernet should be far more rare than losing WiFi support.
