Most suggestions seem to be what people usually recommend. I haven’t used any of these myself, since I’m running a NUC. Perhaps another person can share their thoughts. They’ve been discussed often in those forums (just different brands).
Thank you for your detailed feedback. I hadn't expected this to be a tinker project, but it seems to offer a solid, well-thought-out solution. Your suggestions were very helpful! I've ordered a mini PC featuring an 8-core N305 processor, 8GB RAM, 250GB NVMe storage, and a 6-port Intel NIC at 2.5Gbps. The entire system uses about one-fifth of the power draw of the i5 CPU I was considering. The cost came to just over £300, which is nearly double my original budget, but I plan to treat it as an expense through my company since it appears to be a flexible setup. Some extra components were included for larger storage, making it suitable for several years of upgrades or repurposing—perfect for OPNsense's 2024 requirements (they recommend 120GB). Even if I change my mind, it won't be wasted. I was considering a higher-end option with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage for around £400, but it felt excessive. I should note that price conversions are roughly 1:1 at about $1 per £, though VAT and import duties apply. Delivery will take about a month, so I’m not in a hurry.
