Hey everyone, I've been thinking about getting a top-of-the-line desktop for a while now...not necessarily a high-end Threadripper. I'm planning to spend around 4000 CAD by mid-August 2020. My goal is to build a system that will keep up with my needs for as long as possible. I was looking at a 3950 processor on a Gigabyte Master motherboard and either 64 GB or the full 128 GB RAM. But with the rumors about Zen2+/Zen3 desktop chips arriving later in 2020, I'm wondering: Should I wait? Or should I take advantage of possible cost savings?

I need a super powerful machine just for fun. If I had to explain, it’s because I’ve been working through my MSC on a two-core Celeron at 900MHz—barely enough to run Adobe and Edge together. Now my work is in condensed matter, analyzing nanoscale images, and editing them with software. Running multiple images at once isn’t possible for me, but I’d love that capability. My current setup can’t handle the software or other tasks efficiently. The program stores 0.1 GB image bundles, which would be great if I wanted to play sandbox games later.
I'd say a 3900x works as a solid choice until the 4000 series arrives. Opt for a good motherboard and at least 32GB of RAM. It seems like you don’t need anything beyond that. Extra RAM doesn’t always boost performance unless you’re actively using it.
Thanks for the response, boggy77. I’m considering purchasing a third-generation model but might delay getting the fourth generation until late 2020. I’d prefer not to need an upgrade for many years.
Avoid buyer regret similar to LMG's experience when they constructed their Lounge with a Ryzen 7 2700X in April last year, just three months before the Ryzen 3000 launch. In my opinion, it would be wiser to opt for an affordable placeholder CPU at this time.
