I disconnected the modem and repositioned the cable, which appears to pass straight through the wall into the room with it. I returned outside and reattached both cables to the splitter, tightening the green ground wire (it connects to a metal box and ends near a battery-like connector). After coming back inside, I used compressed air to clear dust from the modem, then reinserted the Ethernet cable and powered it on. I tested my Android tablet with a YouTube video right away. It seems at least one of these steps helped resolve the issue. Edit: I ran a speed test—download is very slow (0.36mbps), upload matches expectations (11.3 mbps up, 10–12 mbps down). I expected around 120mbps download.
It seems your connection might be experiencing issues despite strong uploads. The modem’s US light is working well, but the DS light is flickering. Since uploads are fine, it could be a problem with the modem itself.
I contacted my ISP who reviewed some logs and explained the situation. It seems the problem ties to the cold weather but mainly involves the coax cable and/or my modem. As temperatures fall, the signal strength from the device grows, reaching levels nearly double what’s recommended. Over the past day, the temperature has been dropping steadily, causing the outgoing signal to rise hour by hour. This overload is making incoming signals difficult, resulting in almost no download speed. They’re scheduled to visit tomorrow to address the cross-talk issue.
Wow, really glad you found someone with expertise from your ISP. Considering what you said about uploads working but downloads being extremely slow, I’m leaning toward agreeing with their technical support team. From what you shared about getting internet with limited speeds, it seems the connection quality might be inconsistent—either the downstream paths aren’t properly synchronized with the modem or they’re experiencing unstable signal strength and noise levels. It’s reassuring they’ll send someone to inspect it in person.
