I bought Netgear 1000Mbps powerline adapters around a year ago because the Wi-Fi in our house wasn’t performing well. My router, a Netgear Nighthawk N7000 from 2-3 years ago, is on the first floor while my PC sits almost directly above it in the second-floor bedroom. For most of the past year everything worked fine, but recently speeds have dropped significantly—from nearly 100 Mbps with a 40ms ping to between 20 and 40 Mbps with a 70-80 ms ping. I ran a speed test downstairs via Wi-Fi and got around 100 Mbps, which matches the ISP’s advertised rate. Nothing has changed in terms of adapter placement or settings. I’ve restarted the router several times and enabled Quality of Service on it, but the issue persists. It’s really annoying trying to play VR games online and understanding what my teammates are saying. Audio and gameplay feel very choppy with STBC and Onward now, whereas before everything was smooth. Do these adapters need a reset occasionally? Any suggestions?

Do you have any recent problems? The adapters shouldn’t need resetting, but it might point to a hardware issue with the adapter.

You're asking about potential interference points. The routers and adapters are placed close together, which can cause signal issues between them.

Do you see any locked doors? Are there any pieces of furniture blocking the path? Have you moved the adapters to a different spot? Is the primary router experiencing sluggish Ethernet performance?

The computer is situated in a compact bedroom. I typically close the door while playing to avoid disturbing my wife, though I doubt this impacts performance since PL adapters draw from my home’s electrical system. The placement of the adapters hasn’t shifted—sadly, my options are restricted to outlets near my PC or router. I haven’t checked the router’s Ethernet connection yet, but Wi-Fi speeds remain solid as long as you’re on the first floor.

Consider keeping the door open and enjoying some music. Run several speed tests using speedof.me and Google Speed Test for better accuracy. Edited November 25, 2019 by LogicalDrm

He relies on powerline adapters; the door state isn't related. He's also verifying WiFi performance for speed at the base while confirming a powerline link between floors. Edited November 25, 2019 by LogicalDrm

Okay, thanks...I'll try this test when I get home. I've been using speedtest.net Do you think maybe I should try resetting the PL adapters to the default settings? I recall there being a 'factory reset' button on the back. Edited November 25, 2019 by LogicalDrm

Sir, the Wi-Fi performs well below the stairs but struggles above them. Using powerline adapters has helped with my gaming PC in the upper floor, and it's been effective so far.

Consider restarting them to check if the issue resolves, or at least determine if they're simply in a poor condition.
