I received a 100 Mbps fiber connection two days ago. It came with a built-in modem+router (control panel available at 192.168.10.1). It functions perfectly on all devices, but I’m experiencing speed problems on my laptop. On other devices in the house—phones, smart TVs, etc.—download and upload speeds are consistently 120 Mbps. My two laptops with the same Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4A card only reach up to 40 Mbps each, which feels like a deliberate limit. I’ve tried several fixes: resetting network settings, changing wireless modes, and performing a clean boot on one laptop. Still nothing works. I’m also seeing file transfers between laptops via shared folders capped at 40 Mbps, and using my phone’s hotspot as Wi-Fi gives me much higher speeds (200+ Mbps). What could be causing this discrepancy?
Attempt to connect the laptop directly to the gateway and observe any changes.
I connected an Ethernet cable and achieved 120 Mbps, but the issue persists with Wi-Fi.
Sure, connect your phone to the computer and perform a test using Wi-Fi on your phone.
Do you have another Wi-Fi network available, perhaps from a friend, that you could use to test your laptop?
Windows girl transfers on LAN networks can face bottlenecks when settings are adjusted for public connections. Switching to a private network should halt data scanning once received, even though upload speeds remain unchanged. Note, there’s no bandwidth restriction—it’s due to extra security measures that reduce your transfer speed on local files.
You can observe that the connection is private, and both speeds are consistent across the network and mobile tests using the same server.
